Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Many people experience difficult or distressing events during their lives. While some people are able to process these experiences over time, others may continue to experience emotional, psychological, or physical effects long after the event has occurred. These experiences are often described as psychological trauma.

Trauma can occur following events that feel overwhelming, frightening, or beyond a person’s ability to cope at the time. For some individuals, trauma may lead to symptoms associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

In Australia, it is estimated that around 5–12% of people will experience PTSD at some point in their lives, although many more people experience trauma-related difficulties that may not meet the full criteria for PTSD.

At MindZen Psychology in Black Rock, Bayside Melbourne, we provide trauma-informed, evidence-based psychological therapy for individuals experiencing the effects of trauma and post-traumatic stress.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma can result from a wide range of experiences. These may include:

  • accidents or injuries

  • physical or emotional abuse

  • sexual assault

  • domestic or family violence

  • childhood neglect or adverse childhood experiences

  • sudden loss or bereavement

  • medical trauma

  • witnessing distressing events

  • workplace trauma or high-stress occupations

For some individuals, trauma may involve a single distressing event, while for others it may involve repeated or ongoing experiences, particularly during childhood or adolescence.

Trauma affects not only thoughts and emotions but also the body’s nervous system, which may remain in a heightened state of alertness long after the original event has passed.

Common Effects of Trauma

People who have experienced trauma may notice changes in how they feel, think, and respond to situations.

Common trauma-related experiences may include:

  • intrusive memories or flashbacks

  • distressing dreams or nightmares

  • feeling constantly on guard or hyper-alert

  • difficulty relaxing or feeling safe

  • emotional numbness or detachment

  • avoiding reminders of the traumatic experience

  • difficulties with sleep or concentration

  • irritability or sudden emotional reactions

  • feelings of shame, guilt, or self-blame

  • physical symptoms such as muscle tension or heightened startle response

Not everyone who experiences trauma will develop PTSD. However, trauma can still have a significant impact on emotional wellbeing, relationships, and daily functioning.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition that may develop following exposure to a traumatic event.

PTSD symptoms are typically grouped into several categories:

Re-experiencing symptoms
such as intrusive memories, flashbacks, or distressing dreams.

Avoidance symptoms
including avoiding thoughts, conversations, or places that remind a person of the trauma.

Changes in mood and thinking
such as persistent negative beliefs, emotional numbness, or feelings of detachment.

Increased arousal and reactivity
including hypervigilance, sleep difficulties, irritability, or being easily startled.

For some individuals, trauma may also contribute to difficulties such as anxiety, depression, emotional regulation challenges, or relationship difficulties.

How Psychological Therapy May Help

Psychological therapy can help individuals safely process traumatic experiences and develop strategies for managing trauma-related symptoms.

At MindZen Psychology, therapy for trauma may draw on a range of evidence-based approaches, depending on the individual’s needs and experiences.

These approaches may include:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)
A well-researched therapy designed to help the brain process distressing memories and reduce their emotional intensity.

Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)
Supporting individuals to understand how trauma affects thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

Emotion regulation and nervous system strategies
Helping the body return to a calmer and more regulated state.

Stabilisation and grounding techniques
Developing skills that help individuals manage distress and feel safer in the present.

Trauma therapy typically progresses at a pace that feels safe and manageable for the individual, with a focus on building emotional safety and stability.

Trauma-Informed Approach

At MindZen Psychology, we recognise that trauma can affect how people experience safety, trust, and connection.

A trauma-informed approach recognises the importance of:

  • emotional safety

  • collaboration and respect

  • pacing therapy appropriately

  • supporting individuals to regain a sense of control and stability

Therapy is delivered in a calm, respectful, and supportive environment, where individuals can explore their experiences without pressure or judgement.

Our approach at MindZen Psychology

At MindZen Psychology, trauma therapy is tailored to the individual and guided by trauma-informed and evidence-based psychological approaches.

Our focus is on helping individuals develop a better understanding of their experiences, build emotional regulation skills, and gradually process traumatic memories when appropriate.

Appointments are available in person at our Black Rock clinic in Bayside Melbourne, as well as through secure telehealth psychology sessions for clients who prefer to attend remotely.
